The Way to Wellness for Children

People who are unfamiliar with chiropractic care might think that you only need a chiropractor if you have an injury or back pain, but this could not be further from the truth! In fact, EVERYONE can benefit from good chiropractic care, from birth on up. Children are especially susceptible to spinal sublexation (the misalignment of vertebrae) due to their increased activity levels and rapid growth. Yes, childhood is the very best time to start your kiddos on a path to wellness that will last throughout their entire life.

The birth process can be very traumatic for your baby. If not addressed, further issues could develop in ways you might never expect. Colic, reflux, eczema, ear infections, poor sleep habits, constipation, torticollis, mood swings, cold and flus, and delayed milestones are just some of the issues that can be helped by regular chiropractic care. Also, did you know that an infant's spine will double in size in their first 2 years? Quick developmental changes from rolling to sitting, crawling to walking, running and jumping, can all affect a toddler's spine. Plus with all the environmental stimulations, new foods, and changing motor skills, the nervous system must be cared for. You may find that with regular chiropractic care, your child gets sick less often and takes fewer medications. With such rapid development happening, infancy and toddlerhood is a perfect time to be sure your child's spine and nervous system are functioning at their best.

Once your child reaches pre-school age, they will be introduced to many new stressors. Things like processed food, extended screen time, medications for illnesses, and environmental chemicals are all possible exposures that can affect your child's development. The increase in physical activity like running, jumping, climbing, and riding a bike are also opportunities for your child's spine to experience some sort of trauma. Regular chiropractic care may help with these issues, plus things like allergies, asthma, moodiness, bed wetting, poor balance, and illness. Once they reach school age, children experience new sports and activities, more technology/screen time, and increased stress from schoolwork, peer pressure, and greater independence, all of which can affect their nervous system. Regular chiropractic care may help with growing pains, headaches, belly aches, respiratory infections, ADD/ADHD, and difficulties with sleep and concentration.

The teen years are hard on everyone in the family. Teenagers might experience postural changes from prolonged computer/cell phone/video game use. They might also be experiencing emotional stress from things like peer pressure, new relationships, schoolwork, and learning more adult skills. Gaining independence, driving, playing higher level sports, and constant learning are all milestones that can affect your teen's nervous system. Chiropractic care may help with concentration issues, fatigue, irritability, muscle aches, lack of balance/coordination, painful menstruation, weight gain, and scoliosis.

It is important to understand that chiropractic care does not heal your child's issues and illnesses-- your child's body does! Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between the structure of the spine and the function of the nervous system to preserve and restore health. By correcting spinal sublexations, and removing interference from the nervous system, your child's body can self-heal and self-regulate, which can make a huge difference in your child's health as they grow and develop. When using chiropractic care in cooperation with other healthcare practitioners, your child will be on the best path to a healthy lifestyle!
